Well, it’s now officially the most wonderful time of the year! The holiday season is now in full-swing and that means plenty of Hollywood blockbuster movies have been hitting the nation’s cinemas the past few weeks. Surely, plenty of people will be packing their local movie theatres to see one of the major holiday blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water, Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever or a slew of other popular motion pictures hitting the silver screen!

But, if big crowds aren’t your thing, you might be more happy just staying at home to watch your favorite classic Christmas movie for the one millionth time. Either way you decide to go, nothing truly completes the movie-going experience quite like an arm full of candy, with ice-cold soda pop and a giant bucket of warm, buttery popcorn!

At Redstone Foods, we love going to the movies just as much as anybody else. We also happen to be crazy about candy! And one thing is for certain: candy just seems to hit differently when you’re at the movie theater.

We’re not sure if it’s the warm, neon glow of the concession stand, or the smell of fresh popped, buttery popcorn that makes the cinema one of the most glorious places to eat candy. Maybe it’s simply the magic that fills the air when you’re about to see the latest installment of your favorite cinematic franchise with your family and friends on Christmas Eve. Whatever it may be, we all know that movie theater candy surely has its way of sweetening the whole experience!

Movie theater candy is often judged by how well it pairs with buttery popcorn

You’ve probably already tried mixing your M&M’s with your popcorn before. But if you haven’t, just know that you’re really missing out on something special! The combination of salty and sweet just fits perfectly within the movie going experience. Follow this burst of flavor with a cool, refreshing sip of your favorite soda pop will send your tastebuds to into pure, savory bliss!

There are plenty of other popular concoctions that can be made by mixing your popcorn with a theatre box of candies. Kristen Danley-Greiner from the website Mashed wrote a whole article on which candies are best to mix with your popcorn.

M&M’s sit mightily atop the list, but some relatively surprising candies also earned themselves a mention. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Reese’s Pieces are a great addition to popcorn for peanut butter lovers. And some people are even brave enough to mix Skittles or Dots into their buckets of popcorn!

Whatever candy you end up mixing with your popcorn, the combination of salty and sweet is something that just can’t be beat! We suggest trying a few of those mixtures on your next trip to the cinema!

We have probably all had long, drawn-out discussions of what some of the greatest movies of all time are, but what about the best candy to eat at the movies? While it’s impossible for us to ever just pick one, we certainly have quite a few of our favorites. So, quiet on the set! Now, it’s time to dive in!

Sour Patch Kids

SOUR PATCH KIDS THEATER BOX

The popularity of Sour Patch Kids is undeniable. Since their introduction in 1985, these sour gummies have been a smashing hit who’s popularity only seems to be growing! One thing is for certain, these have rapidly become one of the all-time top-selling movie theater candies out there.

Junior Mints

JUNIOR MINTS THEATER BOX

I’ve never realized it until just now, but I can’t recall a time when I’ve ever eaten Junior Mints outside of a movie theater! Now, don’t get me wrong - Junior Mints are definitely in my top 5 candies of all time, but I think they’ve always been exclusively devoured at my local movie theater. Whether you like them frozen or soft, these dark chocolate-covered creamy mints are the perfect companion to your favorite movie.

P.S. They’re also great for keeping your breath fresh if you like spending your date night at the movies!

Dots

DOTS THEATER BOX

Here’s another candy that I’ve probably only ever enjoyed at the movies. While I do remember getting a few snack-size boxes of Dots on a few Halloween trick or treat hauls, in my mind, these fruity gumdrops have always been synonymous with going out to the movies. What’s even better is that they are also available in sour, and tropical flavors that can appeal to a broader range of movie going patrons!

Red Vines

RED VINES LICORICE TWIST TRAY - RED ORIGINAL

Red Vines Licorice Twists are another quintessential movie snack that won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Who else remembers biting off the ends and using it as a straw? We sure do! These old-timey raspberry-flavored licorice twists have been around since the 1950’s and the recipe hasn’t changed at all. These are definitely a must-have snack for your next family movie night!

Mike and Ike

Another candy that was seemingly made for the movies is Mike and Ike original fruits flavor. The classic flavors of cherry, lemon, lime, strawberry and orange have been around since the 1940’s, but many new twists like sour, tropical and berry blast are also delicious additions. A trip to the cinema just wouldn’t be the same without Mike, and Ike!

Milk Duds

MILK DUDS THEATER BOX

These milk chocolate-covered caramels are about as classic of a movie theater candy as it gets! Milk Duds have been popular at movie theaters since the first concession stand sold its very first package of candy. Plus, it always seems like a few of them get stuck to the bottom of the box, so even when you think you’ve run out of gooey caramel goodness, there’s a surprise twist waiting for you at the end. We couldn’t write a happier ending ourselves!

Swedish Fish

These iconic gummy fish candies from Sweden are the perfect snack to enjoy at the movies. Swedish Fish originated in Sweden in the 1950’s and became a big hit over here in the United States in the 1960’s and 70’s. These gummies are 100% vegan as they are made with starch instead of gelatin.

Buncha Crunch

Buncha Crunch are clusters of crispy rice, coated in a rich, creamy milk chocolate. This smaller, bite-sized cluster version of the popular Crunch candy bar is the perfect snack to eat at the movies! The crunchy clusters are also amazing when you combine them with your popcorn! Just be warned: your fingers will get really sticky if you let them melt too much!

Cookie-Dough-Bites-Theater-Box-10896T

These milk chocolate covered Cookie Dough Bites are a relatively new feature at your local cinema’s concession stand. Although they first appeared at American movie theaters in 1997, they have quickly earned their place as one of the best-selling movie time snacks of all time. Mixing perfectly well with your popcorn, these can also be enjoyed frozen for a really special treat!

Reese’s Pieces

REESES PIECES THEATER BOX

Ever since E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial ate these candy-coated peanut butter spheroids on movie screens in 1982 we’ve been hooked! Not only is this peanut butter candy perfect for mixing in with your popcorn, it provides just the right amount of sweet, salty crunchy and creamy all in a tiny little package. We’re definitely ordering a box of Reese’s Pieces at our next movie theater outing!

M&M’s

M&M THEATER BOX - ORIGINAL

Perhaps we’ve saved the best for last with this one. Although it can be difficult to decide which candy you want when you get to the front of the line at the movie theatre concession stand, M&Ms are always a solid choice. They are, without a doubt the best candy to mix into your popcorn, and the candy coated shell will help save you a trip to the restroom to wash your hands.

It really doesn’t matter if you pick original, peanut, peanut butter or any other flavors, M&M’s are always going to be a box office smash!
