Let’s face the facts. We were all children once, and we all had a favorite sugary breakfast cereal when we were growing up. My favorite cereal when I was a kid was Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and around Halloween it was definitely Count Chocula. But in reality, I loved pretty much all of the sweet breakfast cereals. Even into my teenage years, a heaping bowl of cereal remained as one of my favorite quick and easy meals.

Recently, the candy industry has been picking up on the public’s love for nostalgia. In addition to a healthy lineup of retro sweets, many candy manufacturers are coming out with some popular breakfast cereal-inspired products!

It seems like nostalgia is an important driving factor in consumer behavior. It’s no secret that these days, nostalgia sells incredibly well. For instance, just take a look at what’s been popular in 2022: Top Gun was the #1 movie. Kate Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill” became a mega hit thanks to the Netflix series, Stranger Things. Even a bunch of 80s fashion trends have been making a comeback in recent years!

The reason we’re seeing so much nostalgia these days, is people tend to romanticize their own fond memories of the past. This is exciting for the candy industry as a whole, because eating a sweet treat is a great way help people remember “the good ol’ days”. I swear that every time I even think about Honey Nut Cheerios, I am instantly transported to my parent’s basement for some Saturday morning cartoons.

The rise in popularity of sweets for breakfast

Cereal was originally intended to be used as a digestive aid. These were first invented by John Harvey Kellogg (Corn Flakes) and CW Post (Grape Nuts) in the late nineteenth century. Over the course of decades though, breakfast cereals became sweeter and sweeter.

Early marketing departments for General Mills, Kellogg’s and Post Cereals figured out that making their cereals sweet would appeal to a broader range of customers. By the 1950’s and 1960’s these breakfast cereals would begin to be marketed predominantly to children. By the 1970’s and 1980’s, cereal mascots would have their own Saturday morning cartoons, and children’s programming would contain endless advertisements for these cereal brands.

While eating a lot of sugar isn’t the most healthy way to enjoy your first meal of the day, there are actually some benefits. Certainly eating something for breakfast is better than not eating at all. Also, a little sugar in the morning can actually help you wake up your mind and get ready for your day.

A few years back, a whole movement of people began eating ice cream for breakfast. In 2016, people all over the internet began citing a study performed at Kyorin University in Tokyo, Japan that said eating ice cream first thing in the morning helped you become more mentally-alert. While the study (and the news coverage) had its inherent flaws, many people really took to the idea. There’s even a National Eat Ice Cream For Breakfast Day that happens on February 4th, 2023.

Unleash your inner, childlike wonder with these nostalgic and comforting breakfast cereal treats! Unlike pouring a bowl of cereal and milk and grabbing the biggest spoon in your silverware drawer, these quick and easy treats can be enjoyed on the go! So put away your box of bland granola bars and turn up the sweet with these fun goodies.

Perhaps the very first cereal bar ever created was the Kellogg’s Original Rice Krispies Treats. These were invented by a Kellogg’s employee in 1939 as a fundraiser for the Camp Fire Girls. The treat is still beloved by people of all ages to this very day! Everyone loves the soft, yet crispy marshmallow squares as they snap, crackle and pop in your mouth! The treats have been such a constant hit, that Kellogg’s decided to package them themselves in 1995. Today you can get them pre-made with whole grains and individually wrapped in wholesale quantities from our website here.
