Everyone knows how a case of bad breath can ruin your day. Of course, brushing your teeth is a good start, but how do you keep your breath fresh all day long? Breath mints are a popular option – in fact 127.6 million Americans used breath mints, sprays and strips in 2020 alone.

Perhaps it was during the pandemic, where we all noticed how bad our breath can actually get. Some would call it “mask breath” which is the result of a combination of not drinking enough water, and being able to instantly smell your breath because your nose and mouth were stuck together under the mask.

At any rate, the global market for breath mints is expected to grow to $8.527 billion by 2027, up from $5.77 billion in 2020. So, it seems like people really have a vested interest in keeping their breath smelling minty fresh!

How long have humans attempted to freshen their breath?

Breath fresheners have been used in human civilization for thousands of years. Historically, dental hygiene wasn’t always a priority throughout the ages, but people would undeniably come to realize that their breath stinks from time to time. With an abundance of fresh-smelling plants and herbs like mint leaves, cinnamon, cardamom, parsley, fennel, and myrrh, ancient people tried all sorts of things to get rid of their stinky breath.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, the ancient Egyptians created a concoction of honey, cinnamon, frankincense and myrrh that was boiled down into little pellets that could either be chewed or sucked on for a mouth that felt (and smelled) clean.

Different civilizations had their own approaches to combating their bad breath. In 1498, the Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrushes that used the coarse, stiff hairs found on the necks of pigs. Even Babylonians attempted brushing their teeth with twigs over 5,000 years ago.

Altoids are well-known for creating the very first, modern breath mint as we know them today. That was all the way back in 1781. Interestingly, these peppermint oil lozenges weren’t invented to freshen people’s breath, rather they were intended to be used as a digestive aid. It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that they would become known for what they were best at: giving you minty-fresh breath!

LIFESAVERS HARD CANDY ROLL IN DISPLAY - PEP-O-MINT

The original flavor of Life Savers are still going strong since their invention in 1912. Life Savers Pep-O-Mint were an instant hit with consumers, and their early marketing strategy has singlehandedly changed the way candy is marketed in the United States to this day.

Their display boxes would be placed next to the cash registers at stores and restaurants to persuade people to complete an impulse buy. Their slogan “Still Only 5 Cents” encouraged people who received a nickel in their change to buy the tiny mints shaped like aquatic life preservers. This worked exceptionally well, and to this day Live Savers are still some of the best-selling mints around!

In 1978, the company introduced their first sugar-free mints: Breath Savers. These after dinner mints are created with alkaline salt, which neutralizes the production of acid in the mouth, thus promoting good oral hygiene.
